Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding. After all, once the day is over, your photos are what you’ll have left to relive every moment.

But with so many photographers out there, it can be hard to know what you should actually be asking before you book.

As a wedding photographer with 5+ years of experience, I always encourage couples to ask questions, not just about pricing, but about experience, workflow, and how your day will actually feel.

Here are the most important questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking.

1. What is your photography style?

Every photographer shoots differently. Some are more posed and traditional, while others focus on candid, documentary-style storytelling.

Make sure their style matches the way you want your wedding day to be captured.

2. How would you describe your approach on a wedding day?

This helps you understand their energy and presence. Some photographers are very hands-on and directive, while others are more calm and observational.

You will be with your wedding photographer almost the entire day of your wedding, so you want someone whose presence feels comfortable to you.

3. How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience matters, especially when timelines shift, lighting changes, or unexpected moments happen. A seasoned photographer will know how to adapt quickly and stay calm under pressure.

4. What is included in your wedding photography packages?

Ask what you’re actually getting:

• Hours of coverage

• Number of photographers

• Engagement session options

• Number of edited images

• Delivery timeline

This helps you avoid surprises later.

5. How many hours of coverage do we need?

A good photographer won’t just sell you a package, they’ll help you choose what actually fits your timeline and priorities.

6. Do you help with building our wedding day timeline?

This is a big one. A great wedding photographer will help you structure your day so everything flows smoothly and you don’t feel rushed.

7. Do you work with a second shooter?

Ask if a second photographer is included or available, and when they recommend having one. This can impact how much of your day is captured.

8. How do you handle low light or challenging conditions?

Wedding days often include dim venues, evening receptions, or unpredictable lighting. You want someone confident in all environments.

9. What happens if it rains or something unexpected comes up?

A professional photographer should have a backup plan and be able to adapt without stress or panic. For me, during a wedding day, I will work around the rain as best as I can. I have had several wedding days where it was pouring rain all day. You just have to look for little time slots throughout the day where there is little to no rain. And if that is not an option, break out the umbrellas and go play in the rain for your wedding portraits.

10.What do you do to help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera?

If you’re nervous about photos, this is an important question. A great photographer should be able to guide you in a way that feels natural, not forced or awkward. I encourage all of my clients to add an engagement session.

Your wedding photographer isn’t just someone taking pictures, they’re the person documenting one of the most meaningful days of your life.

Asking the right questions helps ensure you not only love your photos, but also feel comfortable, confident, and fully present on your wedding day.
