How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Need?
One of the most common questions I get as a wedding photographer is: “How many hours of wedding photography do we really need?”
After photographing weddings for over 5 years, I’ve learned that every wedding day is unique, but choosing the right amount of coverage can make a huge difference in how your day feels and how your memories are captured.
I offer three wedding photography packages: 2–4 hours, 6 hours, and 8 hours of coverage. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide what fits your day best.
2–4 Hours of Wedding Photography Coverage
This option is perfect for:
- Elopements
- Intimate weddings
- Couples who only want the ceremony and portraits captured
With 2–4 hours, we focus on the most important moments, your ceremony, couple portraits, and a few family photos afterward. It’s a simple, efficient option for smaller celebrations.
6 Hours of Wedding Photography Coverage
This is a great middle-ground option for couples who want more of their day documented without committing to full-day coverage.
With 6 hours, you can expect:
- Final getting-ready moments (like putting on the dress)
- First look (if you choose to do one)
- Couple, bridal party, and family portraits
- Ceremony coverage
- Partial reception coverage (entrances, first dances, speeches, some dancing)
This timeline allows for a well-rounded gallery while still keeping things intentional and streamlined.
8 Hours of Wedding Photography Coverage (Most Popular)
The 8-hour package is the sweet spot for traditional weddings and full-day storytelling.
This coverage typically includes:
- Getting ready photos
- Details and flat lays
- First look and portraits before the ceremony
- Ceremony coverage
- Full reception moments (dances, speeches, open dancing, and exit)
With 8 hours, your day flows naturally without feeling rushed, and every meaningful moment is captured from start to finish.
How to Decide What Coverage You Need
Here are a few important questions to consider when choosing your wedding photography package:
1. Do you want getting-ready photos?
If yes, you’ll need at least 1.5–2 hours of coverage before your ceremony.
2. Are you planning a first look?
A first look adds time earlier in the day but allows you to enjoy cocktail hour with your guests.
3. Will there be travel between locations?
Travel between a hotel, ceremony, and reception venue can take up 30–60 minutes of your photography coverage.
4. How large is your wedding party or family?
Bigger groups require more time for portraits and coordination.
5. Do you want your full reception documented?
If you want moments like cake cutting, dancing, and a grand exit captured, you’ll likely need 8 hours of coverage.
6. Are you planning a send-off or exit?
Sparkler exits, bubble exits, or private last dances typically happen later in the evening and require extended coverage.
7. How important are candid, in-between moments to you?
If you love those emotional, documentary-style moments (guests laughing, hugs, dance floor energy), more coverage time allows for a fuller story.
8. Do you want a relaxed or more rushed timeline?
Shorter coverage often means tighter timelines. If you want a more laid-back, stress-free day, extra time makes a big difference.
9. What time does your ceremony start?
A later ceremony (like 5–6 PM) often pushes your reception later into the evening, which may require more coverage.
10. Do you want sunset or golden hour photos?
Golden hour portraits usually happen 30–60 minutes before sunset and are so worth planning time for.
11. Are you prioritizing guest photos?
If capturing lots of guests and interactions is important, more coverage ensures those moments aren’t rushed or missed.
Sample 8-Hour Wedding Photography Timeline
Here’s an example of how an 8-hour wedding day might look:
- 1:00 PM – Photography begins (details + getting ready)
- 2:30 PM – First look & couple portraits
- 3:30 PM – Wedding party & family photos
- 5:00 PM – Ceremony
- 5:30 PM – Cocktail hour (candids, decor, extra portraits)
- 6:30 PM – Grand entrance & dinner
- 7:30 PM – Toasts & special dances
- 8:00 PM – Open dancing
- 9:00 PM – Coverage ends (optional exit)
Choosing the right amount of wedding photography coverage ensures your day feels relaxed and fully documented. If you’re unsure what fits your timeline best, I always help my couples build a custom timeline that works perfectly for their vision.
